Kinja'd!!!

I just watched a guy bench 315 for 8 reps, and he clearly had more in the tank. Probably 18 0-190 pounds, mid 20's.

I suddenly feel weak. Excuse me while I go eat donuts and cry.

I’ve been running every day t o build up capacity for maximum hedonism in Thailand. And by running I mean elliptical, because 24 y.o. m e is 1,000,000x less hardcore than high-school y.o. m e.

I’ve also reintroduced p ullups as a main staple of my lifting philosophy, because while focusing on powerlifting gainz has been fun... I really miss the strength-to-weight ratio I had in the gymnastics/handbalancing days.

“oh, you benched 2x bodyweight? That’s cool, hey you mind if I bust out 20 freestanding handstand pushups on the bar there? Thaaaanks ”

My s quats are garbage, to which I say... Gymnastics background! I was making reaaaaally good squat gain about 6 months ago, but I fell off and don’t care enough to invest the mental rigidity needed to hop back on, especially a month out from a big trip . For now running and hiking is fiiiiine.

Deadlifts are good considering I hit my very first DL 6 months ago, but in the grand scheme of things my numbers aren’t competive a t all. Yet. Still making easy gains on DL when I focus on powerlifting so I’m not too worried there.

Bench is the only semi- respectable lift, getting close to that

b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l

Tripple-plate 315

So how are my Oppo friends feeling fitness-wise?

Started going to a gym earlier in the year - I can see and feel the results. I am not as obsessed with it as others, but I go for an hour a day 4 days a week, and it has an effect. I lack the innate will or desire for huge dietary changes, but I cut back a little, which can only help.

I’ve also jumped back into the obsession of my younger days, hockey. N ow I hit the ice a couple times a week, and the feeling is back . They say skating is like riding a bike, and the basic parts are true, but my finer work wants practice. That’s probably produced some results too , and the gym gives me needed stamina for when I’m turning over the puck or crashing into the boards or being plowed into by guys 6" taller than me (and I am not small) . Still, I love it, my fountain of youth, never letting it go again.

Never let a 50 hour a week desk job with food always around get the better of you as I did , and don’t try to move on from old loves - if you think they are right, you’re probably correct.

Going on 34 with a dad bod, bad back and a knee that acts up every now and then , it doesn’t get any better IMO. I try though .

Puberty comes back a second time right? I could use some extra energy.

I'm curious to see which of my injuries end up troubling me a few years down the road

For the past few months my shoulders have been taking turns giving out and then crippling my bench for the next week. So sick of it . I’ve thought about seeing a physio but haven’t found the time.

I’m having fun with DLs but very cautious about fucking my back because that will be the end. I try to take the leg press machine to failure afterwards to compensate. I had a friend who slipped two discs in uni and he went through hell.

Office jobs with some stress will do that. I was in the same boat, and I’ve done it most of my working life. Now I snack less at work (not zero, but a bit less), and exercise more. That’s all it takes.

I don’t really care for any other sports, but hockey has always had a place in my heart.  I gave it up via an injury and feeling like I had grown up, but now regret that.  Sometimes what you like as a kid was right after all.

I can do about 50 reps with 12lb dumbbells before my left shoulder starts to feel like it’s going to fall off :(

My main fitness thing is cycling, that also hurts my shoulder, but I can get 10-20 miles before it starts, and it’s manageable  for twice that (my back normally gives out first). Still need to work on hills though, my endurance is too poor at the moment, and even moderate hills can sap my legs for the rest of the ride.

That's brutal, definitely try to find time. My leg routine used to be squat/deadlift/leg press/accessory work but my energy levels have been so low I've had to cut the leg press. I miss it...

I’m struggling to force myself to go to the gym regularly, but I'm slowly getting better at it. It's frustrating because if I can just make myself get there I have no problem working out. I went yesterday so my goal is to make it at least 2 more times this week.

Tore the labrum there a few years ago, so it’s related to that. Doctor thinks I may have had some reaction to the bio- absorbable anchors installed during the repair surgery, leading to an uneven bone surface and irritation. Had an MRI a couple days ago, so we’ll see what things look like now.

For some reason I can do alright with legs on low energy but everything else is usually a write off if I’m tired. Which is often.

I was also just getting into box jumps when my gym removed them entirely because someone — in another branch in another state — fell and injured himself . Love that

Been keeping on my light lifting routine for almost a year. Just free weights in my backyard along with some kettlebell work . Supplementing with beer and whiskey. Gained a lot initially and am now maintaining, which I’m fine with. Feeling good with lots of strength and lots of libido (important when you’re in your thirties and have been married for over a decade).

Cardio consists mostly of mattress marathons. More cardio will get me looking much more cut, but it’s hot now, and there’s no way I’m running  in a gym. Wifey seems pleased with the arms/shoulder/chest/legs and my midsection below the belt so I’m gtg.

My main fitness thing (apart from walking four to five miles a day) is the climbing gym. I used to go three times a week, but I’ve been struggling to make time for it since I got Ravna; lately it’s been once or maybe twice a week. I have started running 35-50 minutes with her once or twice a week, though. I should start doing pushups again so I have some sort of strength thing, but I’m terrible at exercise that doesn’t have some other purpose.

I’m going on a backpacking trip this weekend, but as it’s one person’s first trip and the other’s second,  it’s only a 22 mile out and back over four days, with 3.5k feet of climbing on the way in and 1.5k on the way out.

Man, I miss bouldering. There’s just not enough time to get in everything I want, but there’s a good chance I’ll get back to climbing at least semi-regularly within the next few years...

Ever thought about moving into some of the more advanced calisthenics stuff? Seems like a natural fit with all the climbing

Ha, your motives seem about right. Stay strong, eat good shit, keep the wife happy. Speaking of that, i spent a few years doing physique competitions years ago back when I had no clue what to do with my life. Even as a natural competitor, stay ing that consistently low in bf absolutely wreaked havoc on libido, mood, energy levels, you name it . Bravo to the people who keep pushing anyways, but it wasn’t something I wanted longterm.

I’ve been going for about a year now after hurting myself. It’s been so much slower than the last time, but that ended in injury so I’m fine with this pace. It really just paid off for me during an unlimited track day. I did a 45 min stint in the car in 104 deg heat in full fire gear  with no cool suit. I credit the gym for teaching me how to keep concentration that long under stress. I still had more in the tank, but the car was out of gas and I still had the rest of the afternoon.

Being in my late 30s with two kids, my workouts aren’t nearly robust as they were in college. I basically run 3 miles 3x a week, then have another day set aside for lifting. I hurt my shoulder last spring, and basically couldn’t lift for 6 months or so as it healed, but I’m all good now and have returned to creatine to maximize. My knees and hips aren’t what they used to be, so i don’t really squat anymore, but i have my bench back over 250 which is nice (i’m 6'5", 260 lbs for reference).

I’m not looking to get ripped, just be in better shape than my peers. I’d also like to lose another 20 pounds. I lost 20 when i first kicked off my workouts 2 years ago or so, but haven’t lost anymore. I have toned though, and my shrinking pants size indicate that its working.

Been doing the Vertical Diet for about a month now. Think it’s going alright. Was suppose to hit gym PRs this cycle but tweaked my lower back twice in 7 days. Now my coach and I are changing the whole 4 week program to really hammer technique. I want PRs but they can wait. I would rather be really good at the movements first.

I’ve been very inconsistent for about 3 years. I go to cult crossfit between 0-6 times a week and try to run between 1-5 times a week. I’m a former collegiate xc/track runner so I at least can always just go for a run if I have a fat day, but my fitness is certainly lacking. I was in pretty great shape a few years ago until I fractured my ankle. Ever since then, and taking 9 months off, my heart hasn’t really been into anything fitness related. I’ve ran one half marathon since then (and somehow placed in my age group) but I haven’t been in good shape in a few years. The gym helps, and I’m a lot stronger than when I started (still smol though), but I really need to set some goal and kick my ass into gear. My body can’t really handle high mileage weeks anymore. Loss of ankle mobility plus pain, then compensating for it throws off my hip. I’m sure I can find a balance that works for me. I just need to actually do it. Maybe I need to sign up for a race or two...

I can’t believe I missed this yesterday. I am surprised you can’t squat more. I had a buddy of mine who was probably 140 wet, but was able to squat around 450 fairly easily. He was a gymnast and became a coach. He was insanely strong, and so are most gymnast I have met. Attempting to flip over the uneven bars is an insane shoulder workout.   My training background is that of a power lifter, but mixed with some other elements. If you are trying to build up leg strength squats are the way to go, but you have to strengthen the secondary muscles. If you don’t want to do squats at least do some calf and leg training. Kettle ball swings and squats are a good way to increase core and leg strength. Which you probably don’t need since you have a gymnastic background. I really don’t care about bench. I was able to rep over 400 lbs at 18, but didn’t have any real mass to show it. Dips is what got my chest huge. I’ll do some different types of chest and shoulder press, but I focus more on lower body.

If you come down for the fall meet, we should definitely hit up the gym together.

I haven’t thought about calisthenics, though I probably should. I’m just so bad at discipline exercise. I could start with stretching more regularly . When I said I’m bad at “exercise without another purpose,” I should have said “without some immediate purpose,” like tiring Ravna out, getting myself somewhere, or having fun. I’m bad at doing any exercise where the dividends are down the line.
